Her Revivial
Her Revivial
This piece woke up a smoldering creative spark that was on its way to burning out. Lovingly named Her Revival, the journey of this work was about staying the course and embracing beauty among the tangled up branches of life. Regardless of how life comes at you, there's something restorative that happens when you can lean back and take in all the things that are going well in spite of all the things that are seeming to be there to defeat you. When you can take a step back and honor those pieces, it's easier to give yourself some grace.
Once upon a time, 25+ years ago, I had a passion for going out, collaborating with friends and filling my 35mm camera rolls full of content. I'd disappear into a traditional dark room and bring my images to life. A composition I fell in love with was from a local B-Girl who was very comfortable in her own skin and just exuded poise. I'd later translate this photograph into paintings and had started a very large mosaic.
While I'd later put the mosaic away, unfinished and only 1/15th of the way completed, I never gave up on the vision for the piece. You could say this was one of the pieces that fuel my never give up mentality - I not only completed the large mosaic, but along the way it revived my practice as a mosaic artist.
Dimensions: 50"H x 36"W
Made entirely from upcycled tiles reclaimed from Mercury Mosaics production misfits.
